Importance of Water Treatment

Water is a valuable resource both in homes and in industries. At home, water is used for cooking and cleaning. In industries, it's used in various manufacturing processes. Unfortunately, the rising population and industrialization have resulted in pollution of water sources. Thus, water available has become unhealthy for human consumption. Moreover, scale formation in pipes has led to blockage and destruction of machinery in industries. These drawbacks call for water treatment before it's availed for human and industrial use. Water treatment is necessary for the following reasons;

Elimination of harmful microbes

Raw water contains bacteria like Shigella Species that causes intestinal infections. Such micro-organisms causes' dysentery, a dangerous disease characterized by severe diarrhea. Water supplies have to undergo chemical or filtration processes to ensure freedom from these bacteria.

Providing water clarity

Water supply from lakes, rivers and streams contains dirt like soil particles, leafs and other small debris. This dirt has to be removed to give water the required clarity. Filtration is the best method for water clarification.

Removal of water hardness

Hard water contains metal cations of calcium, magnesium and other chemicals. These metal cations inhibit soap lathering. Hard water leads to the application of more soap in cleaning. Also, cleaning clothes becomes more challenging and time-consuming. Lime softening or ion exchange resins eliminate water hardness.

Removal of toxic chemicals

Water contains numerous chemicals from farm inputs and industrial refuse. Examples of these chemicals are lead and arsenic compounds. Elimination by filtration with block carbon filters removes these chemicals.

In conclusion, water has become a scarce commodity worldwide. Water lobbyist and governments are calling on individuals to conserve water. Use water supply only when needed and turn off the water taps to avoid losses and possible floods. Besides, various water recycling processes have been set up both in industries and in homes to assist in water conservation.
